Details Regarding Job Coaching

Job coaching is an effective method of improving your work skills and your abilities as a team leader, manager, or team member. Your job coach will work with you to understand your job and the aspects of yourself that keep you from working at your maximum capacity. If you have been written up with a Performance Improvement Plan, your job coach will work with you to assess your skills and help you to achieve the goals outlined in the plan. Occasionally you will be asked to take various psychological tests to assess your strengths and weaknesses in the type of position you hold. Your job coach will work with you to maximize your strengths and overcome your weaknesses.

What to expect

Generally you will come in with specific issues. Perhaps your employer has recommended that you get coaching. Or perhaps you feel that something is keeping you from your full potential. If there are issues with your employer, be certain to bring those issues to your first session. At the first session, your coach will do a thorough evaluation to understand the issues that brought up the need for coaching. Following this assessment, your coach will work with you to set goals that will enhance your work performance and mitigate any deficits. You may be given homework assignments to work on between sessions.

Some things to keep in mind

It is important to remember that you and your job coach are a team. Together you will work out a strategy to work on any deficits and to improve your work skills. This means that you will need to be open and honest regarding your issues. This is not the time to blame supervisors or fellow employees. This is the time to look at your own issues and to become the best that you can be.
